Neuroscience of Sleep and Cognition

Vision:

Our vision is to understand brain activity during sleep and the functions it supports. Our lab is internationally recognized as a center of excellence in sleep research and its relationship to cognition.

We conduct fundamental research on sleep electrophysiology and sleep functions, including the neuronal basis of sensory disconnection during sleep and anesthesia (with a focus on the auditory system), wake-promoting neuromodulation (particularly the locus coeruleus–noradrenaline system), and the role of sleep in learning and memory. In parallel, we develop approaches that leverage sleep to improve diagnosis in neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Our work integrates diverse experimental methods across species. In humans, we use intracranial electrophysiology in epilepsy patients, EEG, MRI/fMRI, pharmacological interventions, and eye tracking. In rodents, we combine single-neuron electrophysiology, optogenetics, and pharmacology to uncover underlying mechanisms.
