Recognized as a national center of excellence, the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Department of Vascular Surgery treats the entire range of vascular diseases. This includes arterial aneurysms (abdominal and thoracic aorta and other blood vessels), arterial occlusive disease in the lower extremities (peripheral vascular disease - PVD) and elsewhere, stenoses of the carotid arteries, as well as venous disease.
The Vascular Surgery Department provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of arterial and venous diseases, including aortic and other vascular aneurysms, carotid artery stenosis, peripheral arterial disease affecting the legs, and other less common arterial occlusive conditions. The Department also treats venous disorders and varicose veins and performs procedures to create arteriovenous fistulas and shunts for dialysis patients.
The Department treats traumatic vascular injuries in close collaboration with the Trauma Unit and other surgical departments.
The Department is actively involved in medical education and research, providing clinical training for medical students and an accredited vascular surgery residency program. Its academic activities include both clinical and laboratory research.
The Department performs a wide range of vascular procedures, including carotid endarterectomy, open and endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms, repair of aneurysms in other arteries, abdominal arterial bypass surgery, and reconstructive surgery of the limb arteries. It also offers advanced endovascular treatments for aortic aneurysms using stent grafts.
In addition, the Department performs diagnostic angiography and therapeutic catheter-based procedures, including balloon angioplasty, stent placement, thrombolysis (blood clot dissolution), and embolization.
Department Clinics and Services
The clinic provides consultation, evaluation, and diagnosis for patients with arterial diseases affecting the carotid arteries, aorta, and lower limbs. It also offers ongoing monitoring for patients with diagnosed vascular conditions and follow-up care after vascular surgery or invasive procedures.
The clinic specializes in the evaluation and treatment of venous disorders, particularly varicose veins of the lower limbs. Varicose veins are commonly caused by malfunctioning venous valves and may lead to discomfort, ankle complications, and cosmetic concerns.
Treatment options include surgery, foam sclerotherapy, and catheter-based procedures.
The clinic provides preoperative evaluation and follow-up care for patients requiring vascular access for hemodialysis, including duplex ultrasound examinations.
Treatment options include arteriovenous (AV) fistulas, which connect an artery to a vein, AV grafts using synthetic materials when suitable veins are unavailable, and dialysis catheters when other access methods are not feasible.
The Department operates an advanced vascular laboratory offering diagnostic examinations for hospitalized patients and community referrals, including carotid duplex ultrasound, arterial and venous Doppler and duplex studies of the lower limbs, and other vascular assessments.
The laboratory also provides vascular screening for patients with diabetes and other high-risk conditions. Additional services include medical treatment for vascular-related walking difficulties and iloprost (PGI2) therapy for small-vessel vascular diseases.
