On the 4th of May 2013 we kicked off the Israel Biodesign program at a private reception that was held at the Silicon Valley USA Leumi Bank in Palo Alto, with local Israeli and Jewish community leaders present.

Four guest speakers provided highlights of the new Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center's Biodesign Program, a unique Israeli adaptation of Stanford University's highly successful multidisciplinary program, designed to create world-class leaders and companies in biomedical technology innovation.

The esteemed speakers included, Dr. Richard Popp, Chair of Ethics and Policy at the Stanford Biodesign Program, and Venture Partner at ATV; Dr. Tahel Altman, a Biodesign fellow at Stanford, and an Internal Medicine physician and GI fellow from Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center; Dr. Amir Belson, the first Stanford Biodesign fellow (having joined in 2001), and founder of Neoguide Systems, Zipline Medical, Thermocure, Radguard Medical, VasoStitch, Emboline and Oxivive; Dr. Peter Fitzgerald, Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Technology, Director of the Cardiovascular Core Analysis Laboratory (CCAL) at Stanford, Professor in both the Department of Medicine and the Department of Engineering at Stanford, and co-founder of TriVentures.

The presentations focused on how the joint efforts of Stanford University, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the generous donors, can create the foundation for the Israel Biodesign initiative, a multidisciplinary program designed to bring together and train world-class Israeli leaders and companies in the medical device space. The program is designed for physicians, engineers, researchers and business professionals, to foster team collaboration and innovation within a hospital environment, focused on designing solutions, while discovering unmet needs and business opportunities.

At the end of the event we were proud to announce our new US Board of Advisors; Nancy and Oren Dobronsky, Hanna Shacham, Yasmin Lukatz, Yael Landan and Haya Perlemotter. We look forward to working together and benefitting from their knowledge and expertise

Karin Weiner-Lachmi Ph.D., Director of Development at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (TASMC), organized the event. Dr. Weiner-Lachmi raises funds and establishes business relationships to further the mission of Israel Biodesign and other TASMC programs. Dr. Weiner-Lachmi helps community leaders and donors from over 7,000 miles away to support TASMC’s vision of elevating the quality of healthcare and research to an entirely new level, enabling Israel to become an even stronger leader, with yet another program that will truly contribute to the success of Israeli medical device companies.

Dr. Weiner-Lachmi expressed her deep gratitude to all those who volunteered their support for this enlightening program, including Dan Levinson and Iris Lahav from the USA Leumi Bank in Palo Alto, for their warm hospitality. Finally, Dr. Weiner-Lachmi would like to thank the elegant catering at the event, provided by “Oren's Kitchen.”

About Israel Biodesign:

Israel Biodesign’s mission is to develop Israel’s next generation of leaders in biomedical technology innovation, by adapting the successful Stanford Biodesign Program to the unique Israeli context.

The Stanford Biodesign Fellowship is a multidisciplinary program designed to create world-class leaders and companies. Throughout the ten-month program, teams of physicians, engineers, researchers and business professionals collaborate and innovate. Working in the hospital environment, they discover unmet needs and new business opportunities. The teams design technology solutions, secure intellectual property protection for these designs and develop and begin executing comprehensive business plans.

The program has resulted in several companies progressing to advanced clinical stages and has created leaders in biomedical technology innovation.
