Cardiology - Division

The term structural heart disease encompasses a host of cardiac conditions which cause abnormal blood flow within the heart chambers, either flow in the wrong direction or stagnation of blood in a certain cavity. Several diseases can cause these problems, which might give rise to serious limitation to exercise capacity, shortness of breath, heart failure, stroke, and rhythm disturbances. Some forms of structural heart disease can arise from cardiac defects present at birth and other forms are the consequence of diseases acquired at a later age.

Diseases treated

The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center interventional cardiology team has the experience and expertise to diagnose and treat many forms of structural heart disease in adult patients, including:

  • Defects in the intra-atrial septum (patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect)
  • Defects in the intra-ventricular septum (ventricular septal defect, in adults this is usually the consequence of a heart attack)
  • Heart valve narrowing and leakage
  • Paravalvular leaks following valve replacement surgery
  • Pericardial diseases causing fluid accumulation within the membranes enveloping the heart
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation

Information for patients

As with every type of procedure performed at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center's Interventional Cardiology Unit, all therapeutic technologies, including state-of-the-art implantable devices used for correction of structural heart disease, are made available to Israeli patients with national health insurance unlimitedly, and without additional costs, independently of health management organization affiliation.
