The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Interventional Cardiology Unit provides state-of-the-art care in 4 service areas: the Catheterization Unit, Heart Arrhythmia Clinic, Pacemaker Service, and Atrial Fibrillation Clinic. The unit is the highest volume interventional cardiology facility in Israel, performing more than 5,000 procedures annually.

Medical expertise across a broad range of conditions

The unit performs cardiac procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Valvular and structural heart diseases
  • Heart failure
  • Resistant hypertension
  • Refractory angina pectoris
  • Cardiac rhythm and conduction disturbances
  • Navigated arrhythmia ablation

Unique services

The Interventional Cardiology Unit staff consists of expert medical, nursing, and paramedical professionals, and features state-of-the-art technologies in a dedicated facility.

The unit performs the following procedures:

Diagnostic catheterization and angiography for:

  • Coronary artery diseases
  • Heart muscle diseases (cardiomyopathies)
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Heart valve diseases
  • Arrhythmias
  • Electrical conduction disturbances

Therapeutic catheter-based interventional procedures for:

  • Urgent life-saving catheterizations for heart attack victims (provided on a 24/7 basis
  • Catheterization to open narrow and blocked coronary arteries (balloon angioplasty and stenting)
  • Non-surgical implantation of artificial heart valves
  • Congenital heart defect repairs
  • Isolation and sealing of the left atrial appendage

Pacemaker and defibrillator implantation to treat cardiac conduction disorders, arrhythmias, and congestive heart failure

Ablation to treat cardiac arrhythmias, including a wide range of rhythm disturbances such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia

Advanced technologies and techniques

The interventional cardiology team uses cutting-edge technologies for personalized treatment, including:

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT): An optical signal acquisition and processing method that captures direct images of the arterial wall with extremely high resolution
  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS): An ultrasound probe positioned within the coronary arteries to examine the vessel wall and therapeutic devices used during catheterization
  • Pressure wire fractional flow reserve (FFR) studies: An approach that measures the vascular pressure wave before and beyond a coronary lesion, thereby enhancing the identification and diagnosis of lesions requiring interventional vs. medical therapy
  • Intra-cardiac ultrasound (ICE): A ultrasound probe positioned within the cardiac chambers to diagnose defects and guide therapeutic procedures
  • Drug-eluting stents: The most advanced devices that help maintain long-term arterial patency after blockages are relieved
  • Radial catheterization equipment: Dedicated devices enabling access to the heart from the wrist, as an alternative to the traditional groin access, to enhance patient comfort and procedural safety
  • Heart navigation systems: Enabling real-time 3D visualization for precise positioning and orientation of ablation catheters within the patient’s heart during treatment of rhythm disturbances

Information for patients

Patients are entitled to select their physician from the list of specialists in the unit. This choice does not incur additional fees and is entirely independent of patients' health maintenance organization and insurance coverage.

Israeli patients with national health insurance are treated with drug-eluting stents and other advanced medical implants based solely on medical indications, without additional fees or any type of monetary commitment from the patient.

At discharge, all patients receive complete and comprehensive documentation of the procedure(s) performed, including a CD recording of the catheterization and a full report for review by their referring physician.

The Interventional Cardiology Unit's physicians and staff are committed to providing the best care possible, with personalized care prior to, throughout, and following the procedure. The staff readily extends its support to all patients and their families in a skilled, professional, and personalized manner.

Progressive clinical research

The Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center leads and participates in breakthrough clinical studies with the intent of maintaining its position at the forefront of medical research, thereby advancing current medical knowledge and enhancing patient care and outcomes.
