Pediatric Thoracic Surgery

The Pediatric Thoracic Surgery Unit at Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital, Tel Aviv Medical Center, provides advanced, personalized, and multidisciplinary surgical care for children requiring diagnosis, follow-up, and thoracic surgery.

The unit provides comprehensive surgical care for the full range of pediatric thoracic conditions in premature infants, newborns, and children.

The team has extensive clinical and surgical experience in treating premature infants and newborns with congenital abnormalities, as well as children with complex and rare conditions of the chest. Care combines expertise in thoracic surgery, pediatric oncology, pulmonology, and advanced imaging, enabling precise clinical decision-making and personalized treatment tailored to each patient’s medical, functional, and aesthetic needs.

Treatment incorporates advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), with the aim of reducing pain, shortening hospital stays, and promoting faster recovery.

The unit provides care for children aged 0–16 who require evaluation, follow-up, or surgical intervention for a wide range of thoracic conditions.

Chest Tumors

  • Primary or secondary lung tumors
  • Mediastinal tumors (anterior, middle, or posterior)
  • Pulmonary metastases from other malignancies
  • Chest wall tumors involving bone or soft tissue

Congenital Malformations and Chest Wall Deformities

  • Chest wall deformities, including Pectus Excavatum and Pectus Carinatum
  • Congenital lung malformations, including CPAM (Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation), pulmonary
  • sequestration, and congenital emphysema
  • Bronchogenic cysts and other congenital airway abnormalities

Emergency and Acquired Conditions

  • Pneumothorax, including recurrent cases
  • Complex chest infections, including empyema and lung abscesses
  • Pleural effusion requiring drainage or surgical treatment

Additional Thoracic Conditions and Procedures

  • Hyperhidrosis – surgical treatment with sympathectomy
  • Lung or mediastinal biopsies for diagnostic purposes
  • Treatment of benign or cystic lesions of the chest
  • Surgical management of complications following lung disease or previous treatments
