Psychiatry Division

The Psychiatry Department treats adults, aged 18 and over, who consent to hospitalization and are not an immediate threat to themselves or others. As an integral part of Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, the department integrates patients' psychological and physical care, enabling systemic treatment of both physical diseases that have psychological implications and psychological conditions with physical manifestations.

The department is designed for people with:

  • Depression
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Manic conditions
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Adjustment disorders
  • Emotional trauma
  • Severe life crises that cannot be addressed in an ambulatory setting

Treatment goal: return to functioning

The department is a progressive center, designed for treating both conditions that have resisted previous treatment methods and complex diagnostic and therapeutic cases. Patients hospitalized in the active ward receive intensive intervention during crisis situations in order to improve their condition and help them return to normal functioning as quickly as possible. Hospitalizations are intended to be short, usually lasting no more than a few weeks.

Protective hospitalization

The psychiatric facility also offers a closed unit for female survivors of sexual abuse in childhood, who are undergoing treatment for complex post-traumatic stress disorder. The objective is to keep hospitalization short and return patients as quickly as possible to ambulatory-based care.

The full range of treatments

Patients are treated, as necessary, by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, occupational and art therapists, and a dedicated nursing staff.

Treatments include biological therapies (such as medications, electroconvulsive therapy, deep transcranial magnetic stimulation, and biofeedback), psychotherapy (such as dynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy, and trauma-related therapies), and other approaches. Private therapy is provided along with a range of group therapies.

Affiliated with Tel Aviv University, the Psychiatry Department offers progressive treatments, some of which are in various stages of research.
