The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Rehabilitation Division treats patients requiring rehabilitation following hospitalization, in both clinic and day hospital settings.
Broad range of services and orthopedic procedures
Treatment crosses the range of major disciplines, including:
- Orthopedic rehab following fractures, joint replacement procedures, amputations, tumor resection, and other orthopedic procedures
- Neurological rehab following central nervous system disorders, such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease, and following peripheral neuropathies (nerve damage) and primary muscle diseases
- Neurological rehab for patients with head trauma and following neurosurgical procedures
- Rheumatological rehab for patients with joint inflammation and degenerative diseases

Rehabilitation of patients with diffuse weakness and deconditioning (loss of muscle tone or endurance)
In addition, the Rehabilitation Division offers skilled rehab services for:
- Oncology patients whose illnesses or treatments have impacted their neuro-muscular and skeletal systems
- Amputees requiring care and preparation of the stump for a prosthetic limb, prosthetic fitting and gait training
- Patients with severe pain, such as from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or fibromyalgia
- Spinal cord injuries and spinal column disorders
- Speech or swallowing problems following neurological incidents or facial surgery
The Rehabilitation Division's Electrodiagnostic Institute conducts the following diagnostic tests:
- Electromyogram (EMG) to detect abnormal muscle electrical activity
- Nerve conduction testing (NCT) to evaluate peripheral nerve integrity and function
- Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) for neurological disease diagnostics
- Peripheral nerve conduction (PNC) testing
Patient-centered multi-disciplinary care
Inpatients receive multi-disciplinary care for improved quality of life, provided by the division’s allied health services:
- The Physical Therapy Institute, offering comprehensive physical rehab, including hydrotherapy in the heated therapeutic pool
- The Occupational Therapy Institute, offering cognitive assessment and training, upper extremity exercises, and activities of daily living (ADL) rehabilitation
- The Speech Therapy Service for speech and swallowing assessment and training
- The Psychology Rehabilitation Service for addressing the emotional needs of patients and their families
- The Social Work Service, providing support for patients and family members, as well as interfacing with the community
Electromyography (EMG) Institute
An EMG, or electromyography test, checks the electrical activity of the muscle systems in the body and the nerves that operate those muscles. An EMG also tests the electrical impulse transmission at the neuromuscular junction (between the nerve and the muscle).
The institute conducts clinical electrodiagnostic tests that evaluate physiological muscle characteristics and the peripheral nervous system. The primary objective of the electrophysiological diagnostic test is to pinpoint the location of nerve damage.
Tests performed by the EMG Institute
- Routine electromyography, composed of several EMG tests: The muscle test, conducted by inserting a needle electrode into the muscle, measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle; Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test and nerve conduction study (NCS) using electrical nerve stimulation that help physicians diagnose problems in the peripheral nerve system.
- Diagnosis of facial nerve problems using electroneuronography (ENoG) and the blink reflex
- Test of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) to diagnose spinal cord sensor injuries
- Bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) and pudendal nerve conduction (PNC) tests to diagnose erectile dysfunction
- Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring during peripheral nerve or brachial plexus surgery
