The Pediatric Urology Unit at Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital treats a wide range of congenital and acquired urological conditions affecting the urinary and genital systems in infants, children, and adolescents.
The unit specializes in congenital abnormalities of the urinary and genital tracts and offers advanced treatment options, including robotic, laparoscopic, and endoscopic surgery, which involve smaller incisions and allow for faster recovery.
The unit’s experienced multidisciplinary team includes pediatric urologists, nurses, psychologists, and physiotherapists. In complex cases, the team works closely with the pediatric and plastic surgery departments, Pediatric Orthopedics, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Nephrology, and the Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Unit.
A new Reconstructive Urology Service, headed by Dr. Yuval Bar-Yosef, specializes in urinary tract reconstruction, treatment of neurogenic bladder, and management of urinary and bowel continence.
Conditions Treated by the Unit
The unit treats a wide range of urological conditions, including:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) – usually caused by bacteria entering the bladder through the urethra.
- Hypospadias – a congenital abnormality of the urethra that may be associated with curvature of the penis.
- Meatal stenosis – narrowing of the urethral opening, commonly seen in circumcised boys due to local inflammation of the glans.
- Hydrocele – a congenital or acquired condition involving fluid accumulation around the testicle.
- Undescended testes – a condition in which one or both testes have not descended into the scrotum.
- Varicocele – enlargement of the veins within the spermatic cord caused by impaired blood drainage.
- Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) – backward flow of urine from the bladder into the ureters and kidneys due to an abnormal connection between the ureter and bladder.
- Urinary tract obstruction – congenital or acquired blockages affecting different parts of the urinary tract. Some may be detected during prenatal ultrasound.
- Urinary tract stones – uncommon in children and often associated with hereditary or metabolic conditions.
- exstrophy – a congenital abnormality of the lower abdominal wall in which the bladder and associated structures develop outside the body.
- Epispadias – a congenital abnormality involving an improperly formed urethra, often associated with curvature of the penis.
- Differences of Sex Development (DSD) – congenital conditions in which the development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical.
The unit also provides treatment for daytime and nighttime wetting, urination difficulties, neurogenic bladder associated with congenital spinal cord abnormalities, neurological diseases, tumors, or spinal cord injuries, as well as tumors of the kidneys, urinary tract, and testes in children.
Inpatient Care
Patients requiring hospitalization are admitted to the Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics Department, located on the 2nd floor of Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital.
The unit also performs urodynamic testing under sedation, supervised by an anesthesiologist.
In addition, prenatal consultations are available for pregnant women when fetal ultrasound findings raise suspicion of urinary tract abnormalities, such as dilation of the fetal renal pelvis or urinary tract.
