Imaging (Pediatrics)

The unit is part of the Imaging Division at Tel Aviv Medical Center and provides a wide range of diagnostic imaging examinations for infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant women. These include fluoroscopy and X-ray examinations, low-dose CT scans, ultrasound examinations, and complex MRI scans performed under general anesthesia.

The unit performs approximately 35,000 imaging examinations each year, including 24,000 X-rays, 5,000 ultrasound examinations, 3,000 MRI scans, and approximately 1,100 CT scans.

The Pediatric Imaging Unit is a center of excellence providing a full range of diagnostic imaging examinations for children, with each examination planned and coordinated according to the child’s age and clinical condition.

The unit is part of the Imaging Division at Tel Aviv Medical Center and provides a wide range of diagnostic imaging services for infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant women, including fluoroscopy and X-rays, low-dose CT scans, ultrasound examinations, and complex MRI scans.

The unit also serves as a teaching and training center for radiologists, residents, and students from Israel and around the world, and is recognized by the Scientific Council of the Israel Medical Association as an accredited training center in pediatric imaging.

Pediatric MRI Service

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an important diagnostic tool for the diagnosis and follow-up of a wide range of medical conditions. One of its key advantages is that it does not use ionizing radiation. Recent technological advances enable high-quality MRI examinations in children and infants.

At the Pediatric Radiology Unit at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, pediatric MRI examinations are performed under the close supervision of a highly skilled radiology team. All radiologists are pediatric radiology specialists who have completed formal fellowship training in North America, ensuring the highest standards of image interpretation. Pediatric MRI scans are monitored in real time, with images reviewed before contrast administration, when required, and before the patient is discharged.

The examinations are performed by imaging technologists experienced in pediatric MRI, who undergo ongoing training and strict quality control. Scans are performed using advanced MRI systems and technology, with a wide range of protocols tailored to the child’s age and the specific clinical question.

Pediatric Ultrasound

The unit performs ultrasound examinations for infants, children, and adolescents by a team of radiographers and radiologists with extensive experience and expertise in pediatric imaging. Examinations are performed using advanced ultrasound systems and innovative techniques, including contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

The unit also serves as a teaching and training center for radiologists, radiographers, residents, and students from across Israel.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of various organs and structures in the body. It does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation, making it particularly suitable for fetuses, infants, and children, who are especially sensitive to radiation. Imaging of organs in infants and children is also often more effective than in adults due to their smaller body size.

The examination is painless and non-invasive. A parent, including a pregnant parent, may remain with the child during the examination.

Ultrasound examinations are performed either on an urgent basis, through the Emergency Department or during hospitalization, or as outpatient examinations, depending on the clinical indication.
