The department treats a wide range of conditions and diseases in children from birth to age 16. Children are admitted either urgently through the Emergency Department or as planned admissions from one of the hospital’s outpatient clinics.
With more than 30 inpatient beds, the department admits thousands of children each year. The team includes senior physicians, specialists, residents, registered nurses, and practical nurses, as well as administrative staff and social work and psychological services.
The physicians of the Pediatric Department also staff the Neonatal and Preterm Infant Department at Lis Maternity and Women’s Hospital.
The department’s multidisciplinary team includes highly experienced pediatric specialists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists, and clinical dietitians, all with extensive expertise in caring for children.
The department also has access to specialists in a wide range of medical and surgical pediatric subspecialties, supporting comprehensive diagnostic and treatment processes.
The nursing team is highly skilled in caring for infants, children, and adolescents with a wide range of conditions, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tract diseases, heart conditions, and neurological and developmental disorders. The nurses place great emphasis on comprehensive care for both the child and family, working in close partnership with parents. They believe that high-quality medical and nursing care, together with family involvement, is essential to successful treatment.
As part of the comprehensive care provided during hospitalization, and based on medical and therapeutic considerations, patients may also be offered integrative medicine treatments tailored to each child’s medical condition, including:
- Acupuncture – to help manage pain, anxiety, and sleep difficulties
- Osteopathy – to improve physical function, relieve tension, and enhance mobility
The department is affiliated with the Department of Pediatrics at Tel Aviv University and regularly trains residents in pediatrics and family medicine. It also serves as a teaching and training center for medical students from Tel Aviv University and nursing students.
The department considers community service an integral part of its role. Its physicians work in several clinics and urgent care centers throughout Tel Aviv, helping ensure continuity of care for the city’s children. The department maintains close and ongoing communication with community physicians who regularly refer patients to the hospital and receive updates from the department’s medical team. Upon discharge, each child receives a detailed medical summary and treatment plan for their community physician.
The department is equipped with modern medical technology that enables continuous monitoring of children during hospitalization. It is designed to provide a welcoming, child-friendly environment for both children and their parents.
We believe that parents’ presence and involvement in their child’s care around the clock are essential, helping reduce the child’s anxiety and strengthen communication and trust with the medical team.
During Your Stay
Families have access to a parents’ area equipped with hot and cold water, utensils for parents and children, and a refrigerator where items labeled with the child’s identification details may be stored.
- Meals – Meals are served at set times: breakfast from 8:00–8:30 AM, lunch from 12:00–12:30 PM, and dinner from 6:00–6:30 PM. Infant formula is available for babies up to one year old. The Ezer Mizion volunteer organization also provides meals and sandwiches for parents.
- Family visiting hours – Daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. One visitor may stay in the room with the child without time restrictions.
- Overnight stay – If a child is hospitalized for one day or longer, it is recommended that one parent stay with the child throughout the hospitalization, including overnight. Each room has a reclining chair that converts into a bed for the accompanying parent. A laundry room is also available for parents, with sheets, pillows, and blankets.
- Recreational activities and play areas – On the second floor of Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital, there are two classrooms for hospitalized children: a kindergarten classroom led by a kindergarten teacher and a school classroom led by a teacher. The classrooms offer toys and games to make the hospital stay more enjoyable. Children can also continue their studies and catch up on schoolwork missed during hospitalization. A medical clown visits the department almost every day, entertaining the children with magic, juggling, and imaginative activities.
At the end of hospitalization, the department team maintains ongoing communication with community healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care until the child has fully recovered.
Our follow-up clinics provide ongoing monitoring for infants and children who have been hospitalized with complex conditions requiring continued hospital-based follow-up.
