The Preclinical Research Unit

Laboratory animals are an essential component of biomedical research, enabling the understanding of various stages in disease mechanisms and supporting the development of safe and effective therapies. A mandatory preliminary step in drug development is preclinical testing in laboratory animals, conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements.

The new Animal Facility at Ichilov was established following significant investment and provides advanced, improved conditions for the housing of laboratory animals—primarily mice and rats—for research purposes. All research animals are housed in IVC cages within controlled and continuously monitored rooms, ensuring appropriate temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions.

The Animal Facility is equipped with a wide range of advanced instrumentation, fully supporting diverse research needs. Numerous studies are conducted at the facility across a broad spectrum of medical fields, including diabetes, wound healing, cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, microbiome research, autoimmune disorders, cancer, organ transplantation, genetic diseases, infectious diseases, ophthalmology, investigation of mechanisms of action of various drugs, and surgical research.

All experiments conducted in the Animal Facility are carried out under full veterinary supervision and in strict compliance with the Israeli Animal Welfare Law, the guidelines of the Israeli Council for Animal Experimentation, and international standards, including NRC and FELASA guidelines.

Ichilov maintains an internal Ethics Committee authorized to approve animal experiments in accordance with Israeli legal requirements. The committee is composed of researchers from a wide range of disciplines.

The Animal Facility, together with its skilled and experienced professional staff, provides comprehensive support to researchers throughout all stages of their work and is available to guide and assist in all relevant areas.

The central location of the Animal Facility (6 Weizmann Street) makes it an ideal and convenient site for both short- and long-term access.
