The Geriatrics Division offers diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation for senior adults, for both the short and medium terms.
The Geriatric Division provides specialized care for older adults, with the goal of improving their health, function, independence, and quality of life.
The Division includes three inpatient departments, outpatient clinics, and geriatric services throughout the hospital.
Its multidisciplinary teams include physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals specially trained in the complex healthcare needs of older adults.
The Division also serves as a teaching and training center for medical and nursing students and professionals specializing in geriatric medicine and nursing.
Geriatric Services
- Geriatric Internal Medicine Department: A 32-bed department providing specialized care for older adults with complex medical needs. Patients are admitted through the Emergency Department or transferred from other hospital departments.
- Geriatric Rehabilitation Departments A and B: Each department has 34 beds and provides rehabilitation following neurological and orthopedic conditions, as well as significant functional or cognitive decline from other causes.
- Comprehensive Geriatric Clinic: Provides assessment and care for age-related conditions such as functional decline, memory problems, depression, medication-related difficulties, and other medical concerns. Patients undergo a comprehensive assessment by a geriatric specialist, followed by recommendations for their primary care physician. When required, the clinic also assists with National Insurance forms requiring a geriatric specialist’s signature.
- Combined Hemato-Geriatric and Onco-Geriatric Clinics: Provide specialized care for oncology patients with additional geriatric needs. Patients undergo a comprehensive geriatric assessment, coordinated with their oncology teams to help optimize cancer treatment.
The Inpatient Geriatric Service and ZAHAV Program provide specialized care for older adults hospitalized in non-geriatric departments. In some departments, patients at risk are proactively identified and offered geriatric support, while in others, geriatric consultations are provided upon request by the treating team.
Care Team
Patients in the geriatric departments receive care from a multidisciplinary team, including dedicated physicians and nurses, as well as allied health professionals according to individual needs:
- Physiotherapy: Rehabilitation of mobility, including walking, climbing stairs, getting out of bed, and transferring to a chair. Treatment facilities include advanced equipment and a therapeutic pool.
- Occupational Therapy: Rehabilitation of daily activities such as dressing, bathing, and eating, as well as cognitive, sensory, and motor abilities. Guidance is also provided on home adaptations and preparation for discharge.
- Speech-Language Therapy: Assessment and treatment of language, speech, swallowing, and hearing disorders.
- Clinical Nutrition: Personalized nutritional assessment and care, including modified food textures and nutritional or caloric supplementation when required.
- Social Work: Support for patients and families through counseling, guidance, assistance with accessing rights and benefits, and discharge planning, including arrangements for home care, foreign caregivers, or residential care when needed.
Medical Information
Patients receive information and explanations about their medical condition upon admission and throughout their hospitalization, including updates on changes in their medical and functional status. Before discharge, patients receive guidance regarding continued care.
For patients with complex or unstable conditions, physicians provide family members with updates as needed. A family contact number should be provided to the department secretary.
