Pediatric Hemato-oncology
Related Departments
Children of all ages come to our treatment program suffering from a wide range of blood acute and chronic diseases (hematology and oncology), such as anemia (from various causes), platelet disorders, bone marrow failure syndromes, diseases of excessive bleeding, and thrombophilia. We also manage various different types of histiocytosis, including Langerhans cell histiocytosis.
Among the malignant diseases that we treat are acute and chronic cases of leukemia, brain tumors (working in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery), bone and soft tissue tumors (in collaboration with the hospital’s National Oncological Orthopedics Department), lymph node cancers such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and tumors of the kidneys, adrenal glands, testicles and ovaries.
Testing and Treatment
In the department we bring together and work in partnership with the top experts in oncology, general surgery, hematology, pediatric neurosurgery, orthopedic oncology, and radiologists, in order to meet the specific needs of each child. Treatment decisions are made in joint meetings with members of the multi-disciplinary team, with detailed discussions of each case. The treatments that we give to children suffering from cancer are at the very frontier of current knowledge of pediatric oncology.
The children who come to us come to think of our department as their second home, thanks not only to the skilled and dedicated staff that we have here, and the expert pediatric oncologists on our team, and the nurses who are trained in pediatric hematology, but also due to the fact that all of their care is concentrated under one roof. Whether they attend as day patients or are hospitalized in the department, because of the need for ongoing treatment, they and their families are always made to feel welcome and as comfortable as possible.
In order to help all our patients and their families, and to shorten the waiting time for results, the majority of tests are carried out within the department by our highly skilled multidisciplinary team, using laboratories that are the most advanced facilities of their type. Blood tests of different types are performed in our state-of-the-art hematology laboratories, together with other sophisticated hematological investigations and diagnostics, including bone marrow testing and spinal taps.
Where necessary, our clinicians supervise various blood and blood product transfusions and provide intravenous iron supplementation. In addition they can carry out a wide range of immunotherapy treatments, including immunoglobulins, Rituximab (Mabthera), and anti-D. In our department we also carries out all types of bone marrow transplantation procedures.
