About scars

Every year, millions of people throughout the world develop skin scars. This is a common wound-healing complication that appears following an injury, such as a cut or burn, a medical procedure, such as surgery, or a medical condition, such as acne. Scars stand out more among dark-skinned people, people who have certain genetic conditions, or individuals with conditions related to collagen production. Scars are also caused by surgical incisions and poor surgical healing. Scars can have implications on patients’ aesthetics, psychological state, and even daily function.

Integrated technologies in the treatment of scars

The following are the primary scar treatments offered by the Center for Aesthetic Medicine:

  • Fractional non-ablative 1540-nm laser - This device transforms scarred tissue into healthy-looking tissue. It is especially effective for treating acne and stretch marks, as well as for rejuvenating and refreshing the skin’s appearance. Fractional non-ablative laser treatment works particularly well for areas of the body that are prone to scarring, such as the neck and cleavage.
  • Pulsed-dye laser (Vbeam) - PDL decreases redness and improves tissue texture and scar flexibility. This laser is the treatment of choice for most scars, primarily because it works well on skin conditions that involve a large number of blood vessels. Pulsed-dye laser technology is clinically effective and has very minimal side effects.
    The device has a large spot size (5–10 millimeters), which promotes rapid treatment, even for large scar areas. Side effects include bruising, which disappears after a week or two following treatment, and temporary changes in pigmentation. During treatment, in parallel, the device can dynamically freeze the area, which increases comfort during the procedure and allows safe and effective treatment under higher energy, while minimizing the number of treatments necessary. 
  • UltraPulse fractional CO2 laser - This multi-layer device and technique enable treatment at multiple dermal layers, offering significant improvement in the appearance of surgical, traumatic, and burn scars. Histological results prove that these treatments improve skin texture quality.
