The Hemato-oncology Division of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood diseases and cancers. All of our doctors are trained in two specialties: hematology — the study of blood — and oncology — the treatment of cancer.
Patients come to our treatment program suffering from a wide range of blood conditions, such as anemia caused by nutritional deficit, blood cell damage, and chronic red blood cell diseases, such as spherocytosis, sickle cell anemia, and thalassemia. Some present with very low white blood cell counts, which can be caused by various neutropenic conditions or platelet disorders.
We treat people for diseases of excessive bleeding and thrombophilia - both heredity and congenital. Our doctors have particular expertise in treating immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). We also manage various different types of histiocytosis, including Langerhans cell histiocytosis.
Among the malignant diseases that we treat are acute and chronic cases of leukemia, brain tumors – working in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery – and bone and soft tissue tumors, in collaboration with the hospital’s National Oncological Orthopedics Department. Lymph node cancers such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and tumors of the kidneys, adrenal glands, testicles and ovaries, are also treated by hemato-oncologists in TASMC.
Testing and Treatment
The treatment of blood conditions starts with blood tests of different types, which are performed in our state-of-the-art hematology laboratories, in order to minimize waiting times for blood counts and test results. Sophisticated hematological investigations and diagnostics are also carried out on-site, including bone marrow testing and spinal taps.
Clinicians in the department can supervise various blood and blood product transfusions and provide intravenous iron supplementation. They also carry out a wide range of immunotherapy treatments, including immunoglobulins, Rituximab (Mabthera), and anti-D.
A major part of the treatment of cancer patients involves the administration of chemotherapy. Today there are more than 100 different types of cytotoxic medications that are used to destroy cancer cells in different parts of the body. They are generally delivered either orally or through peripheral intravenous or central venous catheter administrations.
In every case, hemato-oncologists will assess the best way to treat an individual patient’s cancer, determining the optimum method and the necessary course of treatment. All the department’s nurses are trained in the various chemotherapy treatments that are required, and are carefully supervised to ensure that treatments are carried out according to national and international protocols.

The hemato-oncology department is designed to bring together multi-disciplinary staff who specialize in different aspects of blood disease and cancer treatment, in order to provide all our patients with personalized leading-edge care.
