Prostate Cancer Diagnostics

The key to curing prostate cancer is early diagnosis.  Early diagnosis of prostate cancer is  based on the test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). Along with this test, other diagnostic procedures are available at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, including:

  • Digital rectal examination
  • Prostate biopsy
  • Screening with CT , PET-CT, MRI, Prostate US
  • Radio-isotope scan
  • Cystoscopy

Prostate Cancer Treatment - Ichilov

Israeli specialists have successfully implemented an innovative and comprehensive diagnostic technique based on the test for the tumor cell surface marker – prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). PSMA is a synthesized protein found on the surface of prostate tumor cells. It can also be present in healthy cells but in much smaller quantities. The new technique allows experts to determine the presence of tumors and metastases.

Treatment

Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is a world leader in prostate cancer treatment.  Once the diagnostic process is completed, individualized treatment plans will be developed based all the determining factors.

Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is known for its multidisciplinary approach based on close collaboration between different medical specialties. Treatment is provided here by a team of dedicated professionals comprising oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and other specialists who develop individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans based on the analysis results and specific patient needs.

Various types of prostate cancer therapies are available at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center: surgical treatment, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, as well as the most innovative combination therapies and experimental techniques.

Our urologists specialize in the latest open and minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat prostate tumors, including:

  • Robot-assisted prostate removal (da Vinci XI)
  • Laparoscopic prostate removal (TURP) - the tumor is removed using a special needle inserted into the urethra, without making any surgical incisions.
  • Open prostatectomy - this surgery involves resection of the prostate – removal of the prostate adenoma, which presses against the urethra. Open transvesical prostatic adenomectomy is the most reliable and well-established treatment method for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It may be recommended for patients having a significantly enlarged prostate gland, or simultaneously have bladder stones, or in cases where the bladder surgery is required anyway for some specific reason.

The specialists at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center advocate the use of organ-sparing, minimally invasive surgical techniques. These techniques enable the minimization of surgical intervention and potential damage to healthy tissues, while significantly facilitating the process of post-operative recovery.

Brachytherapy

This procedure involves implanting radioactive materials, capable of destroying a tumor from the inside. Unlike conventional radiation therapies that require an external radiation source, this method involves the use of internal radiation sources.  This advanced precision radiation therapy enables a two-fold increase in the dose of radiation, while sparing the nearby tissues.

Radiation therapy (radiotherapy)

Radiation therapy (radiotherapy) is effectively used for treatment of localized prostate cancer, which is contained within the prostate gland.
Hormonal therapy can improve the overall condition of the patient.  It helps reduce the size of the tumor and hamper its growth. Hormonal therapy is typically indicated in cases where surgical and radiation therapies cannot be used.

At Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov), you’ll find exceptional quality medical care delivered by world-class specialists. Every one of our experts is dedicated to bringing you the best treatment possible while ensuring the highest possible  quality of life. You’ll be in safe hands here!
