New and exclusive in the National Orthopedic Oncology Department at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (Ichilov), O-ARM, an innovative technological system which provides a three-dimensional image of a tumor or a specific organ during surgery.

This new technology provides our experts with a real-time image of the tumor at maximum resolution and in several different dimensions.  It also reduces radiation exposure when compared to earlier methods.  Other advantages of the system are that it significantly shortens the duration of the surgery and following the procedure there is a dramatic reduction in pain; which for the most part disappears completely within only 24-48 hours.

Tumors are sometimes located in complex anatomical areas. This requires the use of orthopedic tools (drill, hammer, etc.) in order to insert the needle which burns the tumor.  When the lesion is located in a complex anatomical area, such as in a spinal vertebra, pelvis, or scapula; lengthy and complex surgery is required. There is a very significant advantage to performing the surgical treatment using a minimally invasive method.  This is now possible thanks to the innovative navigation software that has been especially adapted for these operations in our medical center.

The system effectively facilitates accurate access to the tumor and the use of a wide range of instruments that can be utilized to perform surgical procedures in a minimally invasive manner. And this can now be performed accurately and without the use of any radiation.

Dr. Ortal Segal, senior physician in the National Orthopedic Oncology Department: “Use of these technologies reduces the size of the surgical incision because, now, due to the assistance of the Navigator, a large exposure area isn’t necessary to identify the lesion.  There is also a significant decrease in the amount of radiation compared to similar methods, such as CT.  Furthermore, it will ease and reduce the intensity of the patient’s pain following the surgery.”
