General Surgery Division

Trauma, the leading cause of death in young adults up to age 40, differs from disease in that its source is external, it occurs suddenly and rapidly, and it usually involves complex injury to multiple systems.
About 3,000 trauma victims are treated by the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center annually. Of these, about 600 are admitted to the Trauma Unit. The population of patients is diverse and the causes of trauma may include: car, work or sports accidents; falls from a height; injury due to hostile acts or terrorism; injury as a result of domestic or social violence (fights, stabbings or shootings), or other incidents.

Excellence is the standard
The Trauma Unit of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is one of the best trauma hospitalization facilities in the country. Its dedicated treatment room is equipped with advanced medical equipment allowing it to perform diverse surgical and orthopedic procedures.

Multidisciplinary patient-centered care

Due to the complex nature of the injuries sustained by patients, the unit uses a multidisciplinary treatment model, the first of its kind in the country. Treatment is based on a broad multidimensional view of the patient, who needs interdisciplinary medical care along with continuing emotional support for physical rehabilitation and sudden life change.
At the service of the patients and their families is an experienced, multi-faceted team that includes: physicians with a broad range of specialties, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, and a nursing staff who specialize in treating trauma victims. In addition, the unit collaborates fully with teams from other hospital departments.
The Trauma Unit's team coordinates the patient's treatment from the moment of arrival at the hospital until the day of discharge, with a trauma coordinator responsible for maintaining continuous supportive contact among the patients, their families and the staff.

Active in outreach, education and research

Each senior staff professional is a member of the Israeli Trauma Association. The Trauma Unit maintains close contact with other emergency medicine institutions, such as the Center for Resuscitation and Emergency Medicine, Magen David Adom (Israeli Red Cross), The Gertner Institute, the Israel Association of Paramedics, and others.

The unit conducts clinical studies that are published in the leading local and international medical journals and hosts wide-ranging academic activities, including seminars and courses for professionals, university and community lectures, and professional forums to improve patient treatment.
