Classical treatment

Piano performances offer music therapy in tune with healing

Beyond its entertainment value, music is recognized to have therapeutic powers as well. Music is a universal language that appeals to every culture and age group. It is believed that listening to music reduces stress, slows heart rate, and contributes to overall improved health.

Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is leveraging the influence of music to create an emotionally supportive environment for patients and their visitors. Three times a week, musicians in training from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at the Tel Aviv University volunteer at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, playing classical music on the grand piano in the main atrium of the Arison Medical Tower. The piano was graciously donated by Mr. Yoel Brand, the owner of the Klei Zemer music company.

“This program is a win-win for all,” says Public Relations Director, Aviva Shemer. “The music is a source of energy, filling the air with melodious inspiration. It brings patients pleasure while uplifting their spiritual and emotional health. And, talented musicians have a public forum to entertain and practice while contributing to the community and the wellbeing of others.” The staff enjoys the music as well.

Music has inspired at least several clinical studies at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center to evaluate and measure the contribution of music to patient outcomes. One example is how Mozart music helps improve premature baby metabolism. Health in harmony: another way that the Medical Center promotes a multidisciplinary and multi-sensory approach to patient care.

The performances take place on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 17:00 in the Arison Medical Tower atrium.
