The Sammy Ofer Heart Building
Thanks to many generous donors, and in particular Mr. Sammy Ofer, we have built a new Heart Building to house all of the Cardiology departments and units of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. The cornerstone was laid in August 2007 and at the beginning of 2011 the building will gain its first residents.
The building’s construction was made possible thanks to a generous gift of $42 million dollars by Sammy Ofer, and another $45 million in donations from generous donors from Israel and from abroad. The building, holding the most modern standards, was designed as monolithic glass-framed cube, with red urban windows symbolizing the Heart Building. The building stands nine stories above ground and goes four floors underground. The underground portion will serve as a parking lot in times of quiet, and as an underground 700 bed emergency hospital during times of war.
In phase 1, four floors will be populated, including the relocation of the Cardiology Division and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, as well as two Internal Medicine Departments specializing in heart and blood vessel disease.
The building will also host the preventative medicine division of the hospital, as well as a new ultra-modern division for Executive Medical Services. Later, with sufficient funding (approx. $50 million USD), we will populate the remaining floors with the Clinical Division of the Brain Center and the Dermatology Department.
