Tel Aviv Sourasky Fights Cancer

Every year in Israel, over 30,000 people are diagnosed with cancer, joining over 200,000 Israelis already living with the disease and undergoing treatment at various medical institutions throughout the country. At the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, over 20,000 cancer patients are treated every year, including 3,300 newly diagnosed patients.

Tel Aviv Sourasky is one of Israel’s leading centers for early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and cancer research.

Our extensive activities in the field of cancer, are carried out in two departments operating under one roof: The Oncology and Hemato-Oncology Department, and the Oncological Surgery Department.

  • The Oncology Institute at Tel Aviv Sourasky provides address for all types of cancer and the complications associated with them. The Institute uses modern methods, based on interdisciplinary teamwork and cooperation between the diagnosing doctor and the doctors treating the patient. The Institute’s staff manage institutes, units, services, and follow-up multidisciplinary clinics and engage in group discussions among the various staff working in evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, follow-up, and support.
  • The Inpatient Hospitalization provides for the hospitalization of cancer patients and for chemical treatments, oncological diagnosis, treating complications that chemical or radiological treatment may cause, palliative care, radioactive iodine treatment, and radiation therapy.
  • World-leading Radiation Institute – In which we provide radiotherapic radiation treatment, using top-of-the-line radiation accelerators. In addition, we also conduct radiosurgical procedures. Our institute is the only in Israel recognized by the RTOG – which allows our patients to receive and participate in new treatments which are undergoing Phase 2 clinical trials in the U.S. and Canada, and subject to the hospital’s Helsinki Committee. The treatments are performed by means of a radiation accelerator, standing at the forefront of technological innovation in this field.
  • The Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Unit for Children and Adults – The unit treats patients which various hemotological diseases (acute and chronic leukemia, myeloma, lymphoma) and also some malignant tumors such as breast cancer and sarcoma.
  • Diagnostic Imaging Institute – Making use of world-leading advanced PET-CT technology, and holding the best performance record in Israel.
  • Sexual Therapy and Rehabilitation of Cancer Patients – Men and women suffering from cancer often deal with changes in their sexual functioning and with the body’s appearance, often due to the treatment they’re receiving. The need to uphold intimacy and sexuality is a part of daily life for every one of us, and this unique service helps our patients to regain this intimacy.
  • Alternative Medicine for Cancer Patients – The Alternative Medicine Center for cancer patients offers alternative treatments, under the guidance of the treating Oncologist throughout all stages of the alternative treatment.
  • The Integrated Center for Cancer Prevention – The only institute of its kind in Israel, using ground breaking research and advance genetic technology for early diagnosis and prevention of 11 types of cancer.
  •  The Laboratory for Applied Cancer Research – Our goal is to lead the country in herbal medicine research for the treatment of Cancer. The lab is one of the many medical research laboratories at Tel Aviv Sourasky.

Surgical Oncology - A Center of Excellence

Tel Aviv Sourasky has a world renowned reputation as an institution of medical excellence in the field of Surgical Oncology. Doctors from the world’s leading medical facilities often consult with our doctors before engaging in complicated oncological procedures.

Tel Aviv Sourasky is a referral center for the most complicated procedures, among them: Pancreatic cancer, sarcoma, liver cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, breast cancer and brain, head and neck, and bone cancer.

There are numerous centers within the oncology department:

  • Oncological Hepatobiliary Surgery – Operations which help in healing hepatobiliary diseases (Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary tracts) – particularly in Liver and pancreatic cancers.
  • The National Unit for Orthopedic Oncology – This center treats 80% of patients in the country suffering from skeletal and soft tissue tumors. It is a national referral center for skeletal and bone tumors, for both children and adults.
  • Oncological Neurosurgery – This department has a world reknown reputation for operating on brain tumors, including performing operations while the patient is fully awake, during the removal of tumors in places in the brain controlling function; Brain stem operations using endoscopic methods through the nasal passages, in cooperation with ENT and Head and Neck Departments.
  • Designated Center for the Treatment of Breast Cancer – From targeted biopsy to diagnosing the type and stage of the disease, through lump removal operations, plastic surgery for breast reconstruction (oncoplastic) performed during the lump removal surgery, and psychological assistance and support to contribute to recovery and healing process.
  • Designated brachytherapy treatment for prostate cancer – Performed through the Urology Department of the Medical Center, using radioactive grains which penetrate the prostate area by means of the rectum, saving the patient the need to perform a radical removal of the prostate gland.

What makes our oncology surgery department a “Center of Excellence”?

Number of operations performed: Tel Aviv Sourasky performs an international standard-bearing volume of surgical procedures. The norm is that for an institution to achieve great proficiency in a certain surgical treatment, it must perform a minimal number of procedures per year. For instance, in the United States, for an institution to gain proficiency in liver and pancreatic surgery, it must conduct at least 20 operations per year; Tel Aviv Sourasky performs 100 pancreatic surgeries per year. We have similar numbers for sarcoma, head and neck cancer, brain cancer, and bone cancer.

Staff Quality and Skill: Tel Aviv Sourasky’s doctors undergo extensive training within the hospital, and before joining Western World  leading medical institutions. When they return, they bring the best skill and knowledge achieved around the world, and work under the leadership of our excellent staff and department chairs.

Multidisciplinary Teams: Working in teams has great advantages, particularly in a multidisciplinary center that can surround one patient with professionals from different fields, all thinking together and supporting the patient. Under one roof, leading surgeons partner with expert physicians – oncologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, experts in plastic surgery, microsurgeons, and others. Co-operation between doctors and teams is a standard working procedure at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center

Coordinating the Surgical Approach: Surgical Oncology at Tel Aviv Sourasky implement two surgical approaches widely accepted throughout the world: The first emphasizes targeted operations, under the desire to minimize damage to the tissues and organs. Under this approach, we, for example, perform targeted removals of breast lumps (instead of removing the entire breast). Under the second approach, we stress large operations of wider scope, which have not been attempted in the past because of inadequate knowledge or technology. Under this approach, we can perform the removal of large sarcomal tumors in the stomach, removal of metastases from the peritoneal cavity, and inner-peritoneal chemotherapy, complicated liver and pancreatic surgeries, and others.

Cancer Research

The Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is at the forefront of all areas of cancer research. We conduct basic studies alongside clinical research, in which we work to develop the next generation of cancer-combating medicines.

Our researchers work in close co-operation with the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, with the Sackler Medical Faculty at Tel Aviv University, and with medical research institutes from around the world.

Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center provides researchers (who also serve as doctors) with the resources and tools they need to maximize their chances to reach groundbreaking discoveries.

This assignment is not an easy one, and the expense not small. But we at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center are not willing to compromise on the direction of our path of excellence, and the achievements we have brought to bear.

That’s why we’re asking you to join us, to help us to continue to excel and to lead the way towards early detection and diagnosis, treatment, and research into cancer. For the benefit not just of our patients, but for anyone around the world affected by cancer.

What we have already achieved, thanks to your help:

  • Establishing an Oncological Inpatient Division which provides spacious and appropriate care for patients with complicated diseases. This includes the Unit for Day Hospitalization.
  • Establishing the Advanced radiation Institute, outfitted with the most modern radiation instruments available, for the treatment of cancer patients needing radiation therapy, including Radiosurgery, 4 linear accelerators, a Simulator, and additional advanced equipment.

Today, we are in need of funding towards a new linear accelerator. This new accelerator will be equipped with 3D imaging (CT) and MLC in high resolution, allowing an exact match of treatment to the type of tumor, and preventing injury to adjacent organs.

The simulator in the Radiation Institute allows high-resolution scanning, allowing us to reduce the radiation volume and substantially minimize the side effects of treatment.
