New center of excellence: The Neuroscience Institute
US Friends of TASMC is turning its attention and effort to help create a premier collaborative center for patient care, innovative research and education related to the human brain. Building upon TASMC’s expertise in the neurosciences, the Neuroscience Institute will enable the rapid translation of science into exceptional advances in the treatment of complex neurological conditions. The institute will address a wide range of neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer's disease, cerebrovascular and neuromuscular diseases, brain tumors, epilepsy, depression, and multiple sclerosis. Understanding and mitigating the effects of aging on the brain and neurologic function will also be an important focus.
The unique TASMC challenge
TASMC pursues treatments and cures to complex Israel-related and global medical problems. TASMC-wide initiatives are focused on improving human health, along with the basic research, student and staff education and technology that enable this pursuit. TASMC’s unique challenge is promoting and maintaining medical and scientific excellence while facing constant extreme national survival threats—from imminent war to missile assaults to terrorist attacks—as well as caring for a large sick indigent illegal-migrant population that puts the Israeli population at risk.

The Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is at a critical crossroads. Our award-winning research and clinical teams have forged new discoveries. Innumerable patients have been spared the devastating consequences of disease and injury thanks to our outstanding and dedicated clinicians and progressive treatment methods. Several years ago, Newsweek Magazine rated us one of the top 10 facilities worldwide. The Medical Center’s residency program has been number one in Israel for over a decade. Despite these and other affirmations, we have remained very modest about our achievements, maintaining a low profile—perhaps too much so.
Until now, we have been blessed with generous sponsors. With their support, we have built world-class facilities, including Israel’s first emergency underground hospital, an ultramodern cardiology center, and a state-of-the-art medical tower. It might be surprising to know that Israeli governmental funding has been minimal…and it’s dwindling.
We have challenged ourselves with driving critical patient care and research initiatives, such as the Neuroscience Institute for brain-related research, treatment and prevention; pathfinding cancer research; world-class surgical advancements and expanded scientific collaborations, as well as at-the-ready trauma care in preparation for regional violence. However, to bring these plans to fruition, we can no longer remain “the best-kept secret.” We are now reaching out globally, and particularly in the US, for support from partners like you. Help us get the word out. There are so many opportunities to make an impact.
