​The Endocrinology, Metabolic Disease and Diabetes Unit at Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care and treatment for children and adolescents with suspected hormonal imbalances, such as:

  • Short or tall stature 
  • Delayed or precocious puberty (early puberty)
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Parathyroid gland disorders
  • Adrenal gland conditions 
  • Pituitary gland disorders
In addition, the unit offers extensive services for children, adolescents, and young adults with type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes), type 2 diabetes (hyperglycemia), congenital (neonatal) diabetes and diabetes that is hereditary.

The unit provides diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in the following specialties:

  • The adrenal gland 
  • Disorders of sex development
  • Patients recovering from cancer and cancer treatment
  • Thyroid tumors: benign and malignant 
  • Lipids/lipoproteins: the fats circulating in the bloodstream 
  • Hypercalcemia (high level of calcium in the blood) and hypocalcemia (low level of calcium in the blood)
  • Metabolic bone disorders
  • Transgender youth


The unit collaborates with other disciplines as necessary, such as the Radiotherapy Institute, Nuclear Medicine Institute, Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Department, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Endocrinology Institute and Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center Genetics Institute.
