General Description
Ultrasound scanning is one of the most important imaging methods in ophthalmology. This is due to the fact the eyeball and the contents of the eye socket are comprised of soft tissues that can be examined more accurately by ultrasound that by other methods of imaging, such as CT and MRI.
The ultrasound service diagnoses diseases and tumors of the eye and eye socket using state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment that enables the imaging of both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye and also enables the imaging of the ocular nerves and muscles.
Ultrasound scanning is neither invasive nor painful. The test is relatively short and does not require any special preparation. The scan is performed by an ophthalmologist specialized in this field.
In addition, the service works in close cooperation with the ultrasound unit of the department of imaging to perform color doppler ultrasound scanning of the eye and eye socket, which enables imaging and evaluation of the orbital blood vessels.
Tests performed by the Clinic
Ultrasound testing for evaluation of the posterior segment of the eye - performed generally after cataract and retinal surgery, and in cases of infection, trauma or intra-ocular tumors.
Ultrasound testing of the eye sockets - performed to evaluate extra-ocular muscles, ocular nerves and space occupying lesions (SOL) in the eye socket.
Ultrasound testing of the anterior segment of the eye - performed to evaluate inflammatory processes and tumors, after trauma and after ophthalmic surgery.
The main pathological conditions that can be diagnosed by ultrasound are:
Opacities of the media that prevents view of the fundus of the eye by conventional methods;
Intra-ocular processes, such as bleeding, degeneration, tumor or metastasis in the eye - that require special diagnosis;
Diseases of the ocular nerve - edema, tumors, etc;
Diseases of the ocular muscles - infections, endocrinological disorders, tumors, etc.
