Director       Dr. Anat Kesler

General Description

The Unit of Neuro-Ophthalmology deals with diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of patients suffering from neurological disorders that affect the eyes and sight.

The patients which come to this clinic complain of temporary (long or short term) vision disturbances, full or partial loss of sight, field of vision deficiencies, irregular eye movements, that are expressed as sudden squinting or double vision, ptosis and irregular widening of the pupils.

In addition, some patients treated at this Unit suffer from increased intercranial pressure causing edema of the ocular nerves (Pseudotumor Cerebri).

Vision disturbances can be due to many causes, including:

  • Head injuries
  • Injuries to the ocular nerve
  • Injuries to visual pathways
  • Injuries to brain regions responsible for sight
  • Injury to the muscles that move the eye or processes in the eye socket
  • Inflammatory processes
  • Disturbances in blood supply
  • Ocular or extra-ocular Space Occupying Lesions (SOL)
  • Neurological and endocrinological factors that affect sight in various ways

After diagnosis of the problem and its cause, the optimal treatment of the patient's problem will be found by cooperation with other departments of the hospital including neurology, pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, pediatric neurosurgery and endocrinology.
