General Description
The Department of Ophthalmology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center deals the complete spectrum of ophthalmology and eye disease, from hospitalization before eye surgery involving pre-operative preparation, to hospitalized patients with urgent problems needing immediate treatment, such as trauma to the eyes, corneal inflammation and eye infections following trauma or various types of surgery.
Some of the patients are hospitalized in our department for close follow up before and after various elective surgeries, such as retina or glaucoma procedures.
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Tel Aviv Medical Center offers 24-hour-a-day presence of ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists in the emergency room supply medical services to any person who comes in with a severe eye condition. We treat patients suffering from traumatic injuries, severe eye infections, foreign objects that have entered the eye, chemical burns of the eye and a sudden visual loss for various reasons. Doctors at the emergency unit also advise other doctors on various topics, such as examination of the fundus of the eye in patients suffering from headaches to rule out of increased intracranial pressure, visual disturbances due to neurological disorders, and facial trauma, including fractures to the bones of the eye socket, etc.

The Department of Ophthalmology performs approximately 1,600 surgical procedures on eyes every year and has 16 beds in the wards.
In the Department there are 16 senior doctors, 8 interns and a nursing staff consisting of a head nurse, deputies, instruction coordinator, and other qualified staff.
Approximately 1,500 patients are hospitalized in the Department of Opthalmology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center every year, with 32,000 patients being treated in the department's outpatient clinic.
