Nose and Sinus - Clinic

Director  Dr. Roee Landsberg

General Description

The Clinic for Nose Diseases and Endoscopic Surgery of the Nose deals with the diagnoses and treatment of patients suffering from nose and sinus disorders.

Main Fields of Treatment

Follow-up and treatment of infectious diseases of the nose and the sinuses, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), surgery of the nasal concha, endoscopic biopsies of the nasopharynx, corrections of spinal fluid shunts and the removal of benign tumors from the nasal cavity and sinuses.

Diagnosis is Based on the Following Stages:

  1. Medical history
  2. Endoscopic examination using a flexible or rigid optic fiber that allows an exact observation of the nasal cavity and openings to the sinuses
  3. CT and MRI reviews

Treatment is Based on the Following:

Medication - local or systemic treatment

Surgery - when medication will not treat the disease, or when medication has been used with no improvement in patient's condition

Endoscopic surgery is conducted in the following cases:

  1. Chronic infection of the sinuses
  2. Polyposis of the nose and sinuses
  3. Benign tumors in the nose and sinuses
  4. Repeated nasal bleeding
  5. Blockage of the tear ducts
  6. Secondary exophthalmos as a result of thyroid disease

Surgery to alleviate blockages to airways, resulting from a deviation of the nasal septum or enlargement of the concha, is conducted in addition to, or combined with, endoscopic surgery.

Because of the close proximity of the sinuses and the base of the skull, there are many cases where surgical access can be external or endoscopic. Clinical and surgical treatments are, therefore, conducted in close cooperation with doctors at the Unit for Skull Base Surgery (headed by Prof. Dan Fliss). Joint discussions of the two disciplines to determine plans of action are conducted prior to surgery and during the follow-up period.
