Breastfeeding Preparation Course

Director   Esther Grunis, IBCLC

Although breastfeeding is the natural continuation of pregnancy and childbirth, it does not always come naturally for the new mother.  Babies are programmed from birth to breastfeed, and are usually ready to start breastfeeding within the first two hours after the birth.  Mothers, however, often feel helpless because they have never actually seen another woman breastfeeding, have not learned the basic principles of breastfeeding, and do not know what to do.  In fact, most of the problems in breastfeeding are not due to lack of milk, but lack of knowledge:

Typical questions which arise are:

  • How to latch the baby on to the breast so that he/she gets the milk?
  • How to prevent sore nipples?
  • Which position is best for mother and baby?
  • How can the mother know that her baby is getting enough milk? ?
  • How often should the baby be fed?
  • How can the mother know that her baby is hungry?

As a future mother, it is a good idea to learn as much as possible before holding your beautiful baby in your arms for the first time.  The more you learn before the birth, the easier it will be for you and your baby.

For this reason, and within the framework of the Mamy Lis Mothers' Club, we are pleased to offer a Breastfeeding Preparation Course taught by Esther Grunis, IBCLC who is a certified lactation consultant, and director of the lactation program in the Lis Maternity Hospital.

In this two hour course, you will learn all you need to know about the early days of breastfeeding and mothering, including how to prevent common problems, what to expect from your new baby in the first days of his/her life and what he/she needs and expects from you.

This course is for pregnant women from the 34th week of pregnancy (30th week for twins).  Partners are welcome.

You will learn several different positions for breastfeeding your baby by practicing with dolls.  You will learn how to prevent and treat the most common problems such as sore nipples, engorgement, and what to do if your baby does not breastfeed correctly the first time.

The class is limited to no more than ten couples so pre-registration is advised.

There is a modest fee for the course, but free parking is provided.
