Description
The IVF Unit at Lis Maternity Hospital was established in 1984 and is one of the largest and most progressive fertility institutes in Israel. The unit treats infertility disorders and performs pre-gestational genetic diagnosis on embryos. 6000 couples have been treated at the Lis IVF Unit and 3000 babies have been born with its assistance.
The IVF unit offers a wide variety of options for various infertility disorders, including hormonal imbalances, structural and mechanical impairments of the uterus and fallopian tubes and male infertility issues as well as unexplained infertility. The IVF laboratory employs state-of-the-art technology to achieve fertilization and to produce quality embryos with a good chance of achieving pregnancy.
In order to procure fertilizable ova of high quality, the physicians at the IVF unit use different drugs and treatment protocols to induce ovulation. These treatments require intensive supervision in order to monitor the hormonal response and the development of follicles. To ensure optimal response with minimal side effects, the clinic at the unit is open daily and performs blood tests and ultrasound scans.
The IVF procedure consists of one of several methods. In cases of male infertility, micromanipulation (or ICSI) techniques are used in which a single sperm is actively injected into each ovum. When no sperm can be found in the ejaculate, it is possible to perform a testicular biopsy (TESE) in order to procure sperm for micromanipulation. This technique is used in cooperation with the institute for male fertility. In cases where a large number of embryos is produced, more than is required to achieve pregnancy, extra embryos are cryopreserved and can be used in future attempts. The laboratory can cryopreserve embryos in different stages of development, and the rate of pregnancies from these embryos is high.
The IVF unit also offers a fertility preservation service for women about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation treatment. The goal in these cases is to preserve oocytes or ovarian tissue that may be used in the future, after recovery from their illness, in order to achieve pregnancy.
Another service offered by the unit is preimplanation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in couples who are carriers of certain genetic diseases. This project is maintained in cooperation with the Genetic Institute and allows these couples to conceive health children.
The unit's social worker is available for counseling in order to alleviate the emotional stress associated with the treatment process. The service is given individually or in support groups.
We are committed to giving dedicated care to all our patients while striving for innovation and professional excellence. These values are the basis for our reputation, and we are faithful to them in all aspects of our work.
