The institute offers procedures for sperm location in testicles of men suffering from azoopermia (complete lack of sperm in the ejaculate). This allows fertilization of ova and normal pregnancies, even in such patients.
Some procedures require a surgical microscope and microsurgical techniques. During the procedure, multiple samples are taken from each testicle. These samples are tested in the laboratory and sperm are identified and isolates. Some of these sperm are used for fertilization, and the rest is cryopreserved and reserved for future use.
The fertilization process in such cases requires micromanipulation techniques (ICSI), where sperm are individually injected into the ova. Partners must therefore undergo ovulation induction and ovum pick up in such cases (IVF).
This unique method allows isolation of mature sperm in all men with obstructive azoospermia and in 62% of men with non-obstructive azoospermia, in whom a primary problem in sperm synthesis or maturation exists. Several samples of sperm are cryopreserved and used in further fertilization attempts.
The procedures are performed ambulatorily and patients are discharged on the same day.
24% clinical pregnancies per fertilization cycle, and 47% pregnancies per procedure, have been achieved at our institute. This impressive success rate leads us to suggest performing this procedure on every male partner with azoospermia. |
