General Description

The Department of Neonatology at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center treats about 10,000 healthy newborns every year, born at the Lis Maternity Hospital. The Department of Neonatology provides comprehensive inpatient newborn care to well newborn infants during their hospital stay.

The care for the well newborn begins immediately after birth is by putting it on the mother for first bonding and a trail of breastfeeding. Theen the infant is taken from the delivery room to a special admission room in the newborn nursery. In this room the first examination and evaluation by a nurse and if necessary, intervention are being taken.

Each newborn infant undergoes a complete physical examination by a physician within 12 hours of birth.

After several hours of close inspection and heating, the newborn is transferred to a room in the nursery, or joins his mother if she has chosen the rooming-in option. The Lis Hospital offers full rooming-in possibilities, i.e. the baby spends the entire day with his mother, or partial rooming-in, according to the mother's choice. A doctor is on call 24 hours a day.

Blood tests, treatments and immunization are performed according to the Ministry of Health's requirements, The Neonatal Screening or "Heel Prick" Test, which tests for Congenital Hypothyroidism and Phenylketonuria, Vitamin K administration and hepatitis B vaccination. Other tests, such as special blood tests, x-ray or ultrasounds, are conducted as needed after thorough medical counseling.

Infants are usually examined routinely by a pediatric orthopedics and If needed, consultations are obtained from the avrious multi-disciplinary teams available at the Dana Children's Hospital.
