Main description
The Unit for High Risk Pregnancy, the national referral center for women, is involved in a large and varied range of medical treatments for pregnant women. Referrals generally fall into two categories:

  • Obstetric referrals -
Approximately 20% of all admissions to the unit are for early delivery. The success rate of halting early delivery is particularly high, and women are treated medically to delay labor and to allow fetal respiratory maturation. Other obstetric factors necessitating admission include bleeding due to placenta previa and abruptio placenta, maternal hypertension such as toxemia or chronic hypertension, inappropriate fetal size, treatment for pregnancy induced diabetes, early breaking of the water sack, multiple pregnancy, insufficient amniotic fluid, injury during pregnancy, treatment for fetal Rh hemolytic disease, fetal hydrop, congenital defects and others. The unit participates in coordinated care with neonatal specialists for pre-delivery consultation with women at high risk for early delivery. Interdisciplinary care is also coordinated with the staff of the Ultrasound Institute, which daily performs imaging tests that aid in identifying pathology and in determining options for interventional treatment.
  • Non-obstetric referrals-
The unit treats maternal diseases during pregnancy such as renal diseases, asthma and respiratory infections, gastro-intestinal diseases, thrombocytopenic anemia, emboli, cardiac diseases such as valve disease, neurological disorders such as epilepsy, connective tissue diseases such as lupus, infectious diseases and others.

The unit is responsible for treating and managing the medical care of women with the conditions listed above. The unit also manages induction of labor, if deemed necessary, for pregnant women in the high-risk group. The induction process is begun in the unit and, afterwards, the women are transferred to the Labor and Delivery Room. The Labor and Delivery Room staff thereafter manages the delivery itself.

The Unit for High Risk Pregnancy is a leader in Israel and around the world in research and treatment of the relationship between high-risk pregnancy (such as toxemia, inappropriate fetal size, abruptio placenta, fetal death inutero, recurrent spontaneous abortion) and maternal thrombocytosis. Research, development and treatment of these women are performed in cooperation with the Hematology Institute of the Tel Aviv Medical Center. Women from around the country are referred to the unit for consultation and medical care. The staff of the unit is invited to lecture and consult on the subject around the world, including participation with the National Institutes of Health in the United States. In addition to clinical work, the unit actively participates in academia, including medical research, clinical trials, instruction and lecturing at the medical and nursing schools of the University of Tel Aviv.

The staff of the unit includes doctors, nurses, midwives, social workers, and psychologists. The unit is assisted by specialists in various fields such as general surgery, cardiology, hematology, endocrinology, neurology and internal medicine. The average number of admissions to the unit per month is 341 with length of stay for admissions varying between a few days to a number of months. The unit treats women from around the country.
