When do you go to the hospital?

The following tips will help you know when to go to the hospital:

  • Contractions - regular contractions that gradually get stronger, and recur every few minutes
  • Any suspicion of waters breaking
  • Reduction of fetal movements
  • Bleeding
  • Estimated due date (EDD) - at the end of forty weeks

Many times women become confused between real and false contractions.

There are several ways of differentiating between the two types of contractions:

Real contractions:

  • Generally regular - become stronger and more frequent
  • Lying down does not ease the pain
  • The pain start from the back and moves around to the front
  • Changes in the cervix: which gets shorter until it opens fully

Fake contractions:

  • Generally irregular and do not get stronger
  • Lying down might reduce pain
  • Felt in the front of the stomach
  • No changes in cervix

What should you take with you to the hospital?

  • Pregnancy follow-up card and results of tests performed during pregnancy, including ultrasound
  • Identity card (teudat zehut)
  • A bag with wet wipes, plastic shoes (non-slip, for the shower), mineral water, toiletries, toothbrush and paste, soap, oily lip salve, candies (sweets) to suck, menthol mouth spray
  • We recommended that you bring music discs, reading material, a camera and personal pillow
  • We recommend that you do not bring valuables, jewelry, money or contact lenses

Recommended clothing for your hospital stay:

  • Disposable underwear
  • Gown
  • Nursing bra
  • Slippers
  • Nursing pads

A list of items your baby will need when leaving the hospital is available from the Department.
