Main description At the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center (TASMC) Division of Internal Medicine, the old Queen of Medicine, is once again claiming its throne. After decades of domination by specialization and sub-specialization, the next generation of physicians is once again drawn to the immense challenges of Internal Medicine.
Joining this global trend of renewal, the Division of Internal Medicine at TASMC attracts both patients and doctors with its policy of excellence and a new, upgraded conception of what Internal Medicine is all about. According to this modern-day understanding, implemented daily in the division's 9 wards and 9 institutes, Internal Medicine is the gatekeeper of the medical profession: A good internist must have extensive knowledge in all disciplines, and must keep abreast of all new developments across the board. He (or she) is the only one who can integrate all symptoms and observations into an overall picture, and provide a bird's eye-view of the patient's clinical condition. Thus he (or she) is the leader and pathfinder of the entire diagnostic and therapeutic process. While utilizing the highly advanced technologies and services provided by specialists, the internist remains the personal physician who really knows the patient and cares for him/her on an ongoing basis.

This new approach, represented at the division by an experienced senior staff closely affiliated with Tel-Aviv University's Sackler School of Medicine, is accompanied by a strong emphasis on the development of future professional forces. Already, the division's high academic standards and intellectual challenges are attracting many of Israel's most outstanding interns and young practitioners. Offered a nurturing atmosphere and wealth of professional opportunities, these up-and-coming physicians ensure a promising future for Israel's Internal Medicine in general, and TASMC's Internal Medicine Division in particular.
The future: In coming years, the Internal Medicine Division will continue to promote excellent training and internship programs, attracting the best doctors and graduates, and contributing its share to the national (and worldwide) resurgence of ”the queen of medicine”. Research will be encouraged, in collaboration with scientists from the Weizmann Institute and Tel-Aviv University. In addition, the division will strive to improve rooming facilities in the wards for patients, families and staff members alike. This will be achieved once the process of moving all 9 wards to the new TASMC building is completed.
