Main description The Cardiac Catheter Unit operates within the Cardiology Department of the Tel Aviv Medical Center and performs cardiac catherizations and electro-physiology. The unit receives patients from hospital units and elective patients who are referred to the unit by family physicians at community clinics.
Catherization consists of two stages: The diagnostic stage - a catheter is inserted into the groin (femoral) artery that facilitates the insertion of various, small catheters that reach the heart. Using an injection of contrast dye via the catheter and x-ray film, a picture is taken of the area in contrast.
The interventional stage - after the diagnostic stage, an exact picture is obtained and the condition of the coronary arteries is assessed. If there is evidence of need for surgical intervention, the artery is widened using either a balloon catheter or a boring catheter. In most cases, a support, or metal meshing wire, is implanted to prevent collapse of the artery after widened in order to ensure blood flow within the artery. In cases of myocardial infarction due to occlusion by thrombosis, the Cardiac Catheter Unit uses a unique ultra sound technology to dissolve the clot.
The Cardiac Catheter Unit also uses intra-arterial ultra sound for diagnostic purposes and for implanting various types of pacemakers including defibrillator.
