Main description
The Institute of Pathology at the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center provides pathology and cytology services in the Tel-Aviv area.
Its activities include processing and interpretation of biopsies, operative specimens, intraoperative frozen sections, fine needle aspiration (FNA), cytologic preparations as well as gynecologic Papanicolaou (PAP) smears. Consultations regarding difficult cases are received from Israel and from abroad. In addition to routine histologic methods and special histochemical stains, immunohistochemical procedures with a large battery of antibodies to cellular components and specific tumor markers, as well as ancillary new diagnostic techniques in addition to molecular biology methods, are used. All the laborative activities as well as diagnosis and interpretations of the material are subjected to continuous internal and external quality control. Formalin and other toxic waste are disposed of by environmental approved methods.
The staff of the Institute includes 12 senior pathologists, who are leading specialists in various fields of pathology, residents and biologists, including 3 PhD, cytology screeners, laboratory technicians, prosector and administrative personnel.
The Institute of Pathology performs independent research and collaborative studies with various departments of the Medical Center as well as with research groups at different academic institutions in Israel and abroad.
Recently the Institute of Pathology has been audited by the Standards Institution of Israel and found to comply with the Quality Management Standard SI ISO 9002; 1994, scope: Histopathological and Cytological Diagnosis.
