General description
The Unit for Epilepsy and EEG is comprised of a triad of main services. The EEG Institute performs examinations of recorded brain waves during sleep and alert states. Additionally, the unit conducts continuous EEG testing, performed in the patient's home, for periods of 24 hours and longer using portable EEG equipment. Computerized EEG tests are performed as needed to assess the effect of different drugs on the electrical functioning of the brain in diseased states such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and others.
The Epilepsy Clinic specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of epileptic patients, particularly those cases that are difficult to stabilize. The clinic serves as a referral center for epileptic patients from around the country. The clinic also conducts extensive clinical trials to study the efficacy of new anti-epileptic medications.
EEG Video Monitoring serves to assess diagnoses of various types of epileptic attacks, their frequency and location, in children and adults. This service monitors patients suffering for epilepsy that is resistant to medical treatment and therefore are candidates for surgical removal of the epileptic focal center. The decision for determining surgical intervention is based upon supporting results of the monitoring examinations in conjunction with other helpful tests that are performed at the Medical Center, including:
Structural Imaging using MRI;
Functional Imaging using F-MRI and SPECT;
Neuropsychological Assessment;
WADA Angiography.
The medical staff is involved in research and instruction of residents from all over the country.
