Main description The Invasive Gastroenterology Unit performs invasive procedures for diagnostic and treatment purposes whenever there is a need for direct observation of the digestive system. The unit performs examinations of the upper gastrointestinal system (gastroscopy,) the lower gastrointestinal system (sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy,) the gallbladder and pancreatic systems (ERCP,) the small intestine (enteroscopy,) and endoscopic examinations using endoscopic ultrasound.
The unit also uses endoscopes to perform procedures such as: cauterizing hematomas using laser equipped endoscopes and destroying tumors for symptomatic relief in non-operable cases; inserting feeding tubes via the abdominal wall with the aide of endoscopy in cases of brain injury or inability to swallow; widening of constrictions of the esophagus and the large intestine using balloon endoscopy.
