Main description
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Department operates on all kinds of surgical illnesses affecting children's central nervous system. Surgeries are performed to treat tumors, irregularities in the structure of the skull, hydrocephalus (using shunts and endoscopy) epilepsy and congenital defects.

The department performs the following surgeries and procedures:
  • Microsurgery for brain tumors in the cerebellum, cerebrum and brain stem;
  • Excision of spinal cord tumors;
  • Repair of cranial irregularities including suturing for Cruzan, Apret and Shotchen syndromes;
  • Surgical repair of blood vessels and cerebral aneurysms;
  • Treatments for spinal congenital anomalies including Arnold Chiari malformation and for Syringomyelia;
  • Treatment for hydrocephalus, including neuro-endoscopy;
  • Treatment of head injuries;
  • Neurosurgical treatments of spasticity;
  • Pre-natal counceling

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Department of the Dana Children's Hospital was founded as a unit in 1996 by Dr. Shlomi Constantini and received the status of ”department” in the year 2001.

The department is an inseparable part of the Neurosurgery conglomerate of the Tel-Aviv Medical Center.

Between the years 1996-2002 the department performed more than 2000 surgeries: About 25%for brain tumors, more then 250 craniofacial surgeries, 200 surgeries for congenital defects of the central nervous system, more than 200 endoscopies and corrective surgeries for spinal fluid leaks. Approximately 20% of the children treated by the department come from Tel-Aviv and the surrounding area. The remainder of the children (80%) are referred to the department from other areas in Israel and from around the world.

The outpatient clinic is in operation twice a week. Patients are referred to the clinic for diagnosis, appointments for admission, follow-up and continuing care after hospitalization. Emergency cases are received immediately!

The department organizes a number of multi-disciplinary, consultative forums in Israel and around the world. For example:
  • Weekly joint staff meetings with the departments of Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Neuroradiology;
  • Monthly joint discussions on pediatric brain tumors in coordination with the Hemato-Oncology Department of the Dana Children's Hospital and Tel-Hashomer. These meetings are periodically conducted as live videoconferences with Beth Israel Hospital In New York City.
  • A national ”pre-natal” update meeting held monthly in Jerusalem

The department staff is actively involved in instructing doctors, overseas medical residence and medical students. The staff is also actively involved in laboratory and clinical research.
