Main description The Diabetes Unit of the Endocrinology Institute at the Tel Aviv Medical Center specializes in the treatment of diabetic patients including: type I diabetes (juvenile onset, insulin dependent), type II diabetes (adult-onset diabetes, non-insulin dependent), acquired diabetes after abdominal surgery (e.g. pancreas, etc.,) diabetes during pregnancy. Patients suffering from complications of diabetes are also treated in the unit for heart disease, hyperlipemia, renal disease, vascular diseases, complications in the foot, eye disorders, and various other diseases that accompany diabetes. Additionally, the unit assesses cases of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.)
The unit works in coordination with the Ophthalmology Department, Orthopedics of the foot, Nephrology Department, Neurology Department, Microvascular Surgery, and with the Diet and Nutrition Unit.
The unit comprises: in-house day clinic for assessing the control of diabetes and recommending treatment, testing and assessing the reserve levels of the pancreas (Peptide C testing,) testing for type I (juvenile) diabetes, and for instructing the patient on the treatment and management of diabetes.
