Genetic Disorders Testing Center
The Institute for Special Medical Examinations (“Melram”), that is adjacent to the Tel Aviv Medical Center, performs blood tests to identify carriers of various common genetic diseases in the population. The tests are specially geared toward couples planning to become pregnant or who are in the first stages of pregnancy, including:
  • The fragile X syndrome, one of the frequent causes of mental retardation and autism;
  • Cystic fibrosis – a serious respiratory disease;
  • Gaucher’s disease – a common disease among Ashkenazi Jews that is caused by a deficiency in essential enzymes;
  • Canavan’s disease – a disease characterized by neurological atrophy common to Ashkenazi Jews.
  • Blum’s syndrome and Fanconi’s anemia.
