Photodynamic Therapy |

The new photodynamic therapy to prevent blindness characterized by atrophy of the vision center of the retina is offered at the Institute for Special Medical Examinations (“Melram.”) Atrophy of this type is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50 in the western world, where the incident rate of this disease is approximately 10% of the general adult population.
The disease is expressed in two ways: minimal and advanced. In the advanced condition, blood vessels found underneath the retina develop in a way that causes deterioration of central vision that is essential to reading, driving, identification of faces and other visual functions.
Photodynamic Therapy is performed in two stages. In the first stage, a special contrast solution, vertoporaphin, is injection intravenously. In the second stage, a laser beam is projected onto the area and destroys the affected blood vessels while leaving the retina intact.
