The Lis Maternity Hospital offers an array of birthing preparation courses that are held everyday in the afternoon and evening hours.
Preparatory Course for the First Time Pregnancy
This course, organized and lead by registered nurse midwives from the Lis Labor and Delivery Room, consists of six meetings - five meetings before delivery and one meeting after delivery.
During the course, various topics are discussed including:
Body changes and physiological effects of pregnancy;
Maintaining proper life style habits;
Nutrition;
Signs of impending labor;
Care in the Labor Room;
Dealing with pain and pain management;
Role of the birth partner in the Labor Room;
Establishing initial bonding with the baby;
Nursing the infant - breast feeding;
Recuperation after delivery;
Returning home.
Movies, videos and exercises and an organized tour of the Labor Room accompany the course discussions. Each group of participants is comprised of ten couples.
Preparatory Course for Repeat Pregnancy
This course is specifically geared for the mother who has already delivered at least once before. The course includes two meetings held in the evening. The small groups are lead by a nurse midwife.
Preparatory Course for Natural Childbirth
This course is specially geared for mothers choosing natural childbirth with minimal medical intervention. The course includes learning relaxation techniques, use of water to relieve pain, movement, massage using aromatic oils, vocalization and medicinal herbs. (See detailed explanation of this course.)
Preparatory Course for Haredi Women
This course is specifically designed for religiously observant mothers and conducted by a religious registered nurse midwife. Participation groups are small and conducive to the special relationships and needs of this particular population.
Preparatory Course for Siblings
This course is offered for the family that expects to expand with the upcoming delivery. The course includes two meetings during afternoon hours and focuses on helping the family prepare for a new baby while relating to the needs and feelings of older siblings: jealousy, joy, anxiety, and other feelings regarding the new baby.
