Main description
The Department of Pediatric Surgery is the older of two pediatric surgery departments in Dana Children’s hospital. The department was established at Rokach Hospital, Tel-Aviv, and in 1991 was relocated to its present location.

The department treats children between the ages of birth and 16 years, suffering from hernias of the abdominal wall, inguinal region and umbilical region; undescended testis; functional and inflammatory disorders of the bowel; other gastrointestinal diseases such as cholelithiasis and appendicitis. In addition, all tumors of chest, neck, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract are investigated and treated.

In cooperation with the departments of neonatology and obstetrics, the department investigates and operates on premature and full term infants suffering from NEC, congenital malformations in the chest, neck, lungs and gastrointestinal tract- including esophageal atresia, duodenal atresia and imperforate anus. Departmental physicians in collaboration with the department of High Risk Pregnancy offers medical and supportive consultation to pregnant women carrying children with congenital malformations.

The department conducts a unique outpatient consultative service, which deals with children suffering from constipation and disorders of bowel continence resulting from anal or neurological abnormalities.

The surgical methods employed by our department are among the most advanced in the field –including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. These methods permit investigations and therapy using small cameras, avoiding the necessity of larger surgical incisions – with obvious benefits to the patients.

The outpatient clinic receives children from all areas of the country, and is equipped to treat the full range of pediatric surgical problems.
