Main description
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Dana Children’s Hospital at the Tel Aviv Medical Center treats a wide range of pediatric diseases and coordinates care in the hospital with outpatient ambulatory services.

The unit admits infants and children ranging in age from the newborn to 16 years of age.

The reasons for admission to the unit are many and varied: treatment after extensive and complicated surgeries, serious accidents and trauma with multi-system injuries especially to the head, respiratory failure (for example: severe asthma attack, virulent respiratory infections,) multi-system deterioration resulting from chronic diseases, various diseases that cause chronic conditions, needed intubation and intensive care. The unit also admits children for intensive monitoring: invasive and non-invasive monitoring and invasive procedures such as fiber optic bronchoscopy, dialysis, hemofiltration, and catheter insertion.

The unit has six beds (with the option for six “step-down” beds) and hospitalizes approximately 500 children a year.

The staff of the unit includes three senior physicians specialized in pediatric intensive care, pulmonary diseases with extensive experience in sleep disturbance, resident physicians who man the unit 24 hours a day, 20 registered nurses certified with special clinical training, and support staff (respiratory technician, physical therapist, dietician.)
