Main description
The Unit for Functional Neurosurgery performs surgeries on adults and children to treat various neurosurgical illnesses in the areas of the brain involved in complex functional activities such as language, memory, and motor and sensory function.

The unit uses pre-surgery evaluation modalities that are among the most advanced in the world in order to plan for optimal surgical results for the patient.

These modalities include:
  • Exact anatomical imaging of the brain using MRI;
  • Video EEG monitoring for simultaneous recording of brain waves in patients with a history of epilepsy;
  • Functional imaging of the brain using fMRI;
  • Neuropsychological evaluation of the higher brain functions;
  • WADA angiography for memory evaluation;
  • Imaging of local cerebral blood flow (SPECT).
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

    Surgeries are perform using the latest technology, including:
  • MRI during surgery (MRT);
  • Surgical navigation system;
  • Simultaneous brain wave recording;
  • Electrical Simultaneous mapping.

    The unit provides the following services:
  • Surgical treatment for medically uncontrolled epilepsy;
  • Microsurgery for brain tumors and vascular malformations in the regions controlling language, memory, or functional cognition;
  • Surgical treatment for Parkinson's disease.

    Prof. Itzhak Fried, who is a graduate of Stanford University in the United States, directs the unit. Prof Fried has appointments on the academic medical faculties of Yale University and UCLA in the Unites States and is renowned internationally in the specialty of epilepsy surgery, brain tumors and vascular malformations in the regions of higher brain function.

    The unit includes specialists in various fields: neurosurgery, neurology, brain imaging, neurophysiology and neuropsychology. Weekly staff meetings are held in order to discuss and determine patient care.
