Main description The Tel-Aviv Medical Center serves as the primary trauma center for the city of Tel Aviv and surrounding area, as well as being the referral center for trauma patients from various hospitals around the country.
Since the Tel-Aviv Medical Center is the only level I trauma center hospital in Israel's largest city, three thousand casualties are admitted annually. The combination of a large elderly population in Tel Aviv and sprawling urban development has created quite a large number of unique types of urban trauma, mainly pedestrian and road accidents, criminal and terrorist attacks, etc.
During the last decade, there have been several episodes of mass casualty situations from terrorist attacks in the city of Tel Aviv, with dozens of injured flooding the hospital. The surgical departments are well experienced with the definitive care of trauma victims. The overall organization, coordination, training and quality control are standardized by the Trauma Unit, which is headed by a very experienced trauma surgeon of international reputation.
The unit treats approximately 3,000 trauma cases a year, where 89% are blunt injuries and 11% are penetration injuries.
A multi-disciplinary team of trauma specialists from various departments of the hospital who remain on-call every day of the year mans the unit.
The unit also participates in academic training, teaches courses in trauma care to team members, and conducts clinical research.
