Main description This field has developed during the last decade to answer the problems of cancer developing in the lower rectum as well as surgical problems related to inflammatory bowel disease (Chron's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis). Patients often require extensive and repeated surgery involving reconstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. Until recently, cancer or colitis in the lower part of the rectum was managed by its resection and colostomy. The destruction of the rectum leads to a significant decrease in the quality of life. Sophisticated techniques in colorectal surgery now facilitate reconstruction of the rectum by anastomizing parts of the large or small bowel to the anus leaving reservoirs made of small bowel within the pelvis.
In addition, a new technique called TEM (transanal endoscopic microsurgery) is being used. This enables the resection of tumors and polyps from inside the rectum without the need for extensive surgery via the abdominal wall and subsequent destruction of the rectum.
The Colorectal Unit is a national referral center for these sophisticated and unique types of surgery, and was the first to be officially recognized for post-residency fellowship training in proctology.
Prof. Goldman specializes in pelvic wall surgery and performs surgery for the repair of damaged rectal sphincters.
