Organ Transplantation - Unit |
 |
|
| |
| Director | Dr. Richard Nakache | | Head nurse | Mrs. Pazit Azouri and Mrs. Paulina Katz |
Main description This unit performs kidney, combined kidney-pancreas and liver transplants. The service is capable of performing laparoscopic kidney harvesting for living-donor transplantation, thus avoiding the need to open the abdominal cavity. This surgery enables a quick recovery of the organ donor, minimal wound complications and leaves only a small scar.
The unit runs a pre-surgery clinic for kidney–pancreas–liver transplant patients and a post-surgery clinic for transplant recipients. The unit accepts patients for the waiting list for transplants, and follows up on patients both pre- and post-transplantation. The unit also organizes a support group, lead by the unit’s social worker, which is specifically oriented toward transplant recipients and their families.
The unit’s staff includes transplant surgeons, a nephrologist, a gastroenterologist, transplant coordinator, organ donor coordinator, social worker and dietician.
The unit was the first in Israel to be recognized by the National Medical Council for training surgical residents in transplantation.
